Background
Dr. Leonard F. Sain was one of the earliest and foremost African American educators in Michigan. He has a historically significant career as one of the first African Americans in the field of educational administration in the Detroit Public School system.
Dr. Sain served the University of Michigan in several capacities. He was hired in 1963 as a special assistant to the Director of Admissions and was given the responsibility of recruiting African American students. The following year, Dr. Sain brought 70 African American freshmen to the University and formulated the Opportunity Program, designed to help undergraduate students from disadvantaged environments survive at the University by providing financial aid, tutoring and counseling. Dr. Sain also served the University as Consultant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Director of the University’s project on The Negro in Higher Education, and as a professor of education. At this time, he was also working with New Detroit, Inc. and Wayne State University, where he implemented quality educational programs for minority students. In 1970, Dr. Sain received the prestigious Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship to participate in the Superintendent's Administrative Program.
Dr. Leonard F. Sain was an educator and a leader. He left a legacy of human service and achievement. The Leonard F. Sain Esteemed Alumni Award is given each year to someone who, like Dr. Sain, has shown outstanding achievements and service in their field of human endeavor.
